The Good

The pipe tobacco smell is dead-on right; you'll swear it's the real thing

The Bad

Flavor is muddled by too many sweet additions, overall flavor profile isn't a lot like real pipe tobacco

Bottom Line

Captain Jack has a truly remarkable pipe tobacco aroma, but I am not so sure about the taste.

Halo’s new Captain Jack e-liquid is a pipe tobacco flavor intended for electronic cigarette users who want something with little sweetness and plenty of flavor and throat hit. I have been testing it for about two weeks now, and I have a mixed opinion.

The first thing that struck me about Captain Jack was how much the vapor smells like pipe tobacco. My wife noticed it immediately as I began testing the e-liquid, asking “Is that supposed to be pipe tobacco? It smells like a study with leather-bound books.” I really think that Halo got the smell of pipe tobacco dead-on correct with Captain Jack — it reminds me of an English tobacco blend more than the cherry aromatic blends that some might associate with pipe tobacco. I used to enjoy smoking a pipe from time to time, so the smell of this e-liquid is definitely something that I enjoy.

There is definitely a taste that I identify as “pipe tobacco” in Captain Jack. My problem is the added notes that muddle the flavor a bit. Some of the notes that I think I taste include caramel, vanilla and chocolate. The overall effect is a bit confusing for my taste buds; I feel like the flavor is more complicated than it needs to be.

As with all of the Halo e-liquids that I have tried, vapor production is excellent and throat hit at the 18 mg nicotine level is everything that you’d hope it would be.

If you love the smell of pipe tobacco, then you should definitely give Captain Jack e-liquid a try as I’ve never smelled another electronic cigarette liquid quite like it. However, the taste is just a little strange for me. Perhaps if you used it like you would a real pipe — not inhaling the vapor, but rather letting it linger on the tongue a bit before exhaling — the flavor would make more sense. That isn’t how I use e-cigs, though.
