I was sent Orange de Sangre as part of an e-liquid review pack from Highbrow Vapor some time ago and it has since been waiting in my e-liquid stash for a day when I was in the mood for something fruity. Initially, I was a bit confused when I examined the bottle and smelled the e-liquid inside; I thought the smell resembled that of an orange liqueur such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier, minus the alcohol. However, I didn’t know of any drink or cocktail called “Orange de Sangre.” As it turns out, “sangre” is actually the Spanish word for “blood.”  So, is Orange de Sangre blood orange, or is it Cointreau without the alcohol? Let’s find out.

Orange de Sangre is a really sweet e-liquid. Because it has none of the berry flavor notes you’d taste in a blood orange, I have to conclude that Highbrow Vapor has gone for an orange liqueur flavor here and not so much a blood orange flavor. I can taste a bit of citrus peel, but the primary flavor note is that of a sweet orange juice reduction — something like the taste of Cointreau or Grand Marnier without the alcohol. This e-liquid tastes like it has real orange flavor, and indeed, Highbrow Vapor’s ingredients list shows that Orange de Sangre contains “natural orange flavoring” as well as “natural flavorings.” That’s a big plus as far as I’m concerned; I love orange, but I’m not so fond of artificial orange flavor. Orange de Sangre also contains a bit of water, but that doesn’t seem to thin the vapor or diminish the flavor.

If there’s any knock against Orange de Sangre, it’s the fact that it’s a bit more sweet than I’d like it to be. It hits the sweet flavor notes of real orange dead on, but it doesn’t have any of the sour or bitter notes you’d get from real citrus fruit. If it were just a bit more tangy, I’d be happy to vape it all day. For me, something this sweet is a “dessert” e-liquid — something to vape occasionally, like after dinner when my sweet tooth demands satisfaction. For people who love sweet flavors, though, Orange de Sangre is an e-liquid worth putting on your “to buy” list.
