I believe I have finally started to “get” what Johnson Creek’s angle is, and now that I’ve figured it out, I have to give them some kudos for creativity. When most e-liquid companies release “tobacco” flavors — every e-liquid company I’ve tried to date, in fact — what they’re trying to emulate is the flavor of tobacco. So, the e-liquid will have some combination of nutty and sweet flavor notes that, in combination with nicotine, takes very reminiscent of tobacco when it’s done right — but Johnson Creek does something different. Many of Johnson Creek’s e-liquids don’t appear to emulate tobacco at all; they emulate smoke. I finally got this while I was trying Wisconsin Frost, a powerful mix of peppermint, smoke and menthol flavors.

I’ve realized that because Johnson Creek has such a different take on what e-liquid should taste like, if you try and enjoy their products, it might be unlikely that you’d ever enjoy an e-liquid made by anyone else. On the other hand, if you dislike that smoke flavor, you might find it hard to like any Johnson Creek product at all. This seems especially true of the Red Oak line; apart from Solstice, which I really liked, the other e-liquids have had so much of that smoke flavor that I could hardly taste anything else.

Unfortunately, Wisconsin Frost falls into the not-so-good category for me. I get barely any menthol taste at all out of this e-liquid behind the massive amount of smoke flavor and throat hit that makes me want to cough. I can definitely taste a good amount of peppermint flavor, though, which is nice.

Has there ever been a band or composer who’s talent you couldn’t deny, yet you were unable to really enjoy their music yourself? Wisconsin Frost is sort of like that for me. While I find the e-liquid far too harsh to like, I can imagine that a certain type of electronic cigarette user would really enjoy it. If you’ve tried other menthol e-liquids and found them too sweet, or too mild — and having a high level of menthol isn’t important to you — you may want to give Wisconsin Frost a try because it could be exactly what you’re looking for.
